Squirrels inhabit a wide range of environments including forests, woodlands, urban parks and suburban areas. Tree squirrels are arboreal and spend most of their time in trees, while ground squirrels live in burrows and tunnels.


 Squirrels are small to medium-sized rodents that belong to the Sciuridae family. They are known for their distinctive bushy tail, which they use for balance and communication. Squirrels are found in various parts of the world including North America, Europe, Asia and Africa. There are many different species of squirrel, with some of the most common being gray squirrels, red squirrels, and fox squirrels.


Squirrels have a compact and agile body, with sharp claws and strong hind legs. Their fur can vary in color, including shades of brown, red, and black. The size of squirrels varies depending on the species, ranging from about 5 to 20 inches (13 to 51 cm) in length.


Squirrels are amazing creatures. Did you know that while climbing they can jump 10 times their body length and rotate their ankles 180 degrees in any direction? Squirrels can jump up to 20 feet. They have long, muscular hind legs and short fore legs that work together to aid in leaping. Squirrels have been proven to run at speeds of up to 20 miles per hour, although in general, most squirrels run at half that. Squirrels have 4 toes on their feet, which are extremely sharp and are used to grip tree bark while climbing. They also have 5 toes on their back feet.


 Squirrels are clever creatures and can learn to navigate many obstacles in order to find the most efficient route to food, Squirrels are primarily herbivores, although some species may occasionally consume insects, eggs, or small vertebrates. Their diet consists of nuts, seeds, fruits, berries, mushrooms, and occasionally tree bark. They are also good at finding shortcuts.


 Squirrels use a combination of vocalizations, body movements, and tail gestures to communicate with each other. Their tails can act as signals, indicating danger, while jumping or falling, they use their tails for both balance and a parachute. It can also show the boundaries or movement of the region. Squirrels are not shy about coming out during the day, making them one of the rare wild mammals that many of us actually see.


The mating season for squirrels is during spring and late summer, with squirrels typically having two breeding seasons per year. In which there is a gestation period of 44 days. Female squirrels usually give birth to three to six young. Young squirrels are born hairless and with closed eyes, and they depend on their mothers for care and protection.


 They also have superb eyesight, and they quickly learn by imitating other animals. A male squirrel can actually smell a female in heat from a mile away. Squirrels' eyes are positioned in such a way that they can see behind them.


 The most coveted behavior of squirrels is storing nuts and acorns for the winter. Which is essential for squirrel species that don't hibernate. In addition to living in the eastern US, eastern gray squirrels are found in many western states, with 285 species of squirrels, they can be found on every continent except Antarctica and Australia.


  Squirrels can eat their own body weight every week, which is about 1.5 pounds. Squirrels can fall from a height of 30 meters without hurting themselves. An arctic ground squirrel, a species of ground squirrel native to the Arctic, is the only warm-blooded mammal able to withstand body temperatures below freezing while hibernating.


Back in 2007, Iran claimed that 14 squirrels found near the country's borders were actually spies. In 2013, officials closed the camp in the Los Angeles National Forest after they found an infected squirrel there. The infection actually killed a 15-year-old boy in Kyrgyzstan, which he caught from a mountain squirrel. 100 people had to be quarantined, so this infection could be controlled.
